The Reality of MTV’s Skins

The much-hyped premiere of MTV’s new show “Skins” aired this week, and a few days later sponsors began to drop from the show like blackbirds in Arkansas. “Skins” follows several young kids around as they get into a host of mess, from pill-popping to sex to fights.

Of course, this in itself isn’t news; but the ages of the “actors” are. Their ages range from just 15-17 years old, and because of this, MTV is currently under investigation for possibly violating child pornographylaws… Continue reading

Repealing Progress: Conservative Efforts to Slash Health Reform Will Hurt Vulnerable Populations

Conservative ringmasters in the House of Representatives have staged yet another political circus. This time, gay African Americans are the elephants in the room.

The dead-end vote in the House to repeal the Affordable Care Act took center stage last week. It marked the first salvo in House conservatives’ campaign to derail any and all progress made by the Obama administration. Their crusade promises to dominate the 112th Congress and the 24-hour media cycle as these lawmakers pledge to slash funding for health care and frustrate other initiatives the president supports. Progress Won’t Stop, Can’t Stop!

I am typing furiously right now after reading an article in The Hill discussing Congressman Jim Jordan (R-OH) and his quest to repeal marriage equality in the District of Columbia. He claims that he is doing this in favor of “liberty and small government”. How is repealing marriage in a district you don’t live in acting in the best interest of the citizens in the District? How is that not an invasion of government? You don’t want to provide the District with better schools or voting rights but you feel it’s somehow part of your perverse idea of justice that you intervene when an expansion of rights are underway?
